On August 9th 2016 I started volunteering for an online blog called “The Student Pocket Guide” (aka, TheSPG) and last October, October 9th 2016 to be exact, I wrote a post for them that discussed people keeping up with their physical health while at University; Keeping track of your health at Uni!
Now, I wrote this post because at the time I had been graduated for just over 2 weeks, I had moved home for my year out and I was signing back on to my Doctors, Opticians and Dentists so of course I was going for check ups etc. In this post you will notice I spoke of my Eyes and Teeth mainly due to them at the time being the main things that had come to light and I was getting sorted/treatment for. Well, what I forgot to mention was that since about January of 2016 I had been suffering with chronic pain behind the bottom of my right hand ribs, something that had been giving me excruciating pain for sometimes numerous days on end and something that I had been to the doctors in Hull about previously but to no avail. Well, in February of this year I had finally had enough of the niggling, horrible pain that I was beginning to get on a much more regular basis and, finally after a bit of a hard taking with my doctor I was referred to a Physiotherapist due to something that they thought could be a “Twisted Muscle” below my ribs.
Well they were right, when I went to see my physiotherapist he told me that my muscle below my right ribs was quite badly twisted to the point that it was lifting up and under my ribs themselves and, this was causing my muscle below this to swell also. So, this was actually something that relieved me to know as finally I didn’t feel like it was just in my head! I finally had an answer and it was going to get sorted. Now I am still currently going to physio for this pain, but it is going to get better.. Or at least I hope. All I can do is keep myself active with my daily exercises, which take a total of 10 minutes to do every morning, and see how they continue to go. Some days I feel it’s fine finally and some days it irritates me like mad still, so I don’t 100% know how I feel about it all still.. But, at least progress has been made.
Also, on the subject of my teeth and gums. I recently had my second treatment on my gums, taking place at the end of May, and my dentist has told me he is happy with how they are now looking/recovering. Going to the appointment makes me anxious as hell though! Because they have to scrape the back of my teeth?! And honestly it sounds much worse then it is! But still, the thought of it makes me feel all queasy! However, at least there is improvement there too.
To round off this post, I think the reason I have written it, is due to the fact that;
- Students really should not neglect any parts of there body, keep up to date with all your health matters! No matter how busy you are, trust me, your health being intact will help you much more along the way, trust me on this one.
- If your doctor insists that something isn’t wrong, even after 4-5 visits and being told the same thing, if you know in your gut something IS wrong persistently go back and complain about it. You honestly must or you will begin to doubt yourself when your body is showing you all the signs of not being alright.
“To keep the body in good health is a duty, for otherwise we shall not be able to trim the lamp of wisdom, and keep our mind strong and clear. Water surrounds the lotus flower, but does not wet its petals.” ~Buddha .
