Historical Lovers, this ones for you. Historian Dan Jones’ first season of Secrets of Great British castles is INSANE! I absolutely loved it, I found out so much on historical castles in Britain that I didn’t know. Taking you ALL over it Dan takes you to these beautiful places and tells you all on their histories.
I wanted to tell you of the two places he went that I loved him speaking about the most! And a little on their histories.
The Tower of London;
Here at the Tower, Jones explores the turbulent history of this spectacular place. Being one of Britain’s most famous buildings the Tower has in its past been a;
- military fortress
- a palace
- a royal mint
- a prison
- a zoo
- and a place of execution.
Dan also reveals how at the time one king’s obsession with money led to the Tower becoming the focus of the worst Jewish massacre the country had ever seen! Explaing how a mob of peasants managed to break through the Towers wall as they sought bloody and of course revenge for taxes they could no longer put up with.
Here Dan heads to Gwynedd, in North Wales, exploring the history of Caernarfon Castle. This building was built in 1283 on the orders of Edward I. Jones demonstrates how the castle’s vast stone walls and its very strategically designed towers had repelled all enemies who sought to destroy it therefore earning itself a truly forbidding reputation. However, its military importance faded at the end of the 15th century when Henry Tudor – a Welshman – made his way on to the English throne effectively neglecting Caernaforn Castle’s importance.
Season 2 has already aired and I am yet to watch it on Channel 5 catch up! But, i can’t wait too for this season really did spark my interest and made me want to watch so much more. It fed my historical interest beyond belief.
With love, Charlotte x
