On this day, 105 years ago, the RMS Titanic sank to the bottom the Atlantic Ocean killing over 1,500 people of the 2,224 people on board, so over half of the people on board died due to this disaster. Being the largest ship afloat at the time it was the 2nd of 3 Olympic Open Class liners, Titanic was also run by White Star Line having been built in Belfast, Ireland.
It carried some of the most wealthiest people in the world as well as emigrants from the UK and Ireland but the Titanic only carried enough lifeboats for 1,178 people equalling one third of her total capacity on board at the time. On the evening of the ship sinking the weight of the water and the ship together split the ship in half causing it to have two separate pieces below the water on the floor of the sea bed. The wreck of the ship itself was found 70 years after the accident occurred, having been buried 3,784 miles down in the ocean. The Titanic is the second largest ocean liner wreck in the world, which has only ever been beaten by the sinking of her sister ship HMHS Britannic, the largest ever sunk.
