Mary Tudor, also known as “Bloody Mary” was born on this day 500 years ago.
Daughter to King Henry VIII and Queen Katherine of Aragon she was born in the Palace of Placentia in Greenwich, London. She was the first born of both Henry and Katherine and Henry adored her, often referring to her as “The purl of my world”. But she was not the boy Katherine had promised Henry and he was obviously all too aware of this broken promise.
Mary was christened into the Catholic faith and amongst her god parents, was Thomas Wolsey, Henry’s Cardinal, most trusted friend and Lord Chancellor at the time.
Mary is known for her Title of “Bloody Mary” due to her coming into the throne in July 1553, where she placed her Catholicism religion back into place and burned any people who remained Protestant. Her religion was hugely important to her and she also wanted to be well respected by her people by placing the “true religion” back on her people. The English people were always changing their religion, it is a wonder anyone could keep up!
